I study evolutionary principles in wild bacterial communities. Bacteria are compact genetic units, capable of rapid change and short-sighted evolution. This makes them excellent models for learning how biotic and abiotic pressures shape genomes on Earth. Currently, I am investigating how purge-rates modify competition and metabolism in two highly different, yet remarkably similar ecosystems: gut microbiomes and tree holes.
