I am an MBiol student with a keen interest in microbiology and infectious disease. For my MBiol project I am contributing to the development and optimisation of bovine immune organoids for use in vaccine screening. Cattle infectious diseases are highly problematic, not only for animal health and wellbeing, but also for food security and the economy. The current cattle vaccine arsenal is limited and existing models for screening candidate vaccines are often ethically challenging, expensive, and ineffective. Bovine immune organoids show great promise as a cost-effective, high-throughput and more ethical alternative to current vaccine screening models.
